What Should You Do Before The Movers Come?
It’s best to create a checklist and work through it before the movers arrive. This way, you’ll feel a lot more prepared and can help the movers do the best job that they can. We’ve put together a list of 8 essential steps you should take before moving house:
- Go through your belongings. Sell, donate or bin anything that you no longer need.
- Package up any belongings that you won’t need before the move. Label them.
- Ask the movers if there are any items they can’t or won’t move. Make arrangements if necessary.
- Put aside important personal items like medication, memorabilia and other essentials.
- Clear a space for the movers to park and load the van.
- Protect your floors with blankets or plastic sheets. Ensure there are no tripping hazards.
- Measure any large furniture to see if it will fit through your doors. Dismantle if necessary.
- Make plans for children or pets on the day so they’re not in the way.
When Should You Start Packing For The Move?
Although you may feel like waiting for exchange before starting to pack, this doesn’t always leave you with a lot of time. Despite the small possibility of the sale falling through, we think it’s best to start packing a couple of months before you expected date of completion.
This doesn’t have to mean you’re living out of boxes for two months. Start by packing items that you don’t need or use regularly. This might mean going through the loft first and getting everything organised in there. By the time you’ve finished getting these items together, you’ll have made good progress and feel much more prepared for moving house.
What Information Do Movers Need?
To state the obvious, your movers will need to know the address you’re moving from and the address you’re moving to. As well as that, it’s useful to let them know where they can park and unload your items. If you need to arrange any permits, do so in advance of your moving date.
It’s also useful for you to label any belongings once they’re packed. Write on the top and sides of your boxes a rough description of what’s in them and the location that they belong to. For example, if you’ve put your plates and dishes in a box, you might write ‘crockery, kitchen’. You probably also want to tag that box with ‘fragile’, so the movers know that the contents should be handled with care.
What Should You Avoid Doing When The Movers Come?
As much as possible, when moving house please try not to get in the mover’s way. Many people worry about their belongings and can end up creating a stressful environment for the moving company. If you’re the kind of person who is likely to hover, you might want to get out of the way while the movers are doing their job. However, don’t disappear completely. You might need to answer their questions, so keep your phone to hand at a minimum.
